Dear melissa,
Abit out of topic but I believe you could help me with this.
What does the "Honours" in B Sc (Hons) actually mean?
i. it's part of the structure of the degree/curiculum, depending on the university
ii. Hons is for those who did their final year project
I've been getting confusing answers from almost everyone. Besides, usually those who obtained cgpa of >3.75 can be referred as first class honours degree. If the degree is just B Sc, means it will only be a first class degree?
How about this whole thing in BM?
Thanks.
Regards
Tom (Passerby)
Hi Tom,
This comment is indeed out of place but I will answer you based on my knowledge. I think the answer to your first question is (ii).
Usually a BSc(Hons) course takes 4 years. 3 years of classes and one Honours year focus only on final year project. In countries like Australia, if you choose to stop after 3 years, you will only get a BSc degree (no Honours).
In Malaysia, most courses are BSc with Honours although they are only 3 years. If you drop out of the course, you get nothing.
Now, it will not be fair if everyone get the same degree regardless of their academic performance. So, that's what the "first class", "second upper class" etc is all about. The degree class will be based on your CGPA. Different university set different standards. It's > 3.7 for UKM. Most universities allow first class students to continue a PhD instead of a MSc.
Cheers
Melissa
Thank you so much Melissa.
